Email War - Unsubscribe VS Junk Mail
Categorized under: stories
In the world of online marketing email remains supreme in delivering content, though to this day it sometimes can’t get passed the one super defender, the Junk Mail Button.
See it takes a lot of effort for someone to sit down and request SPAM from a corporation, but it takes less effort to hit that one little button that causes SPAM-lists and can put your corporation on the horrendous “blacklist” of email.
Just like when you were 18 and hanging out going to clubs and you’d walk up to the bouncer trying to get in and he stops you dead center, doesn’t even look at the list and sends you to the back of the line. Then you start with, “But I’m on the list! I’m on the LIST!!!” But it’s too late, someone already used that name -you’re out. And you go to the back of the line, I mean list, with everyone else, like Groupon in the picture below.

Getting on the white list of advertising means having monumental traffic, heavy return on investment and the most important thing any site or entity needs -loyalty.
So before you start sending out heavy images, bogus offers, and buy one get one at half off offers, take into consideration that people are BORED with offers like that.
It takes just ONE click to start building equity in the SPAM black list. ONE. Once you get into that list the incrementation begins to happen pretty quickly and guess what? It’s probably due to crappy design + crappy offers that disconnect a consumer.
Worse yet, my opinion is that each provider, Entourage, Outlook, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL Mail and Hotmail each probably have their own lists. Which means if you use something simple like “faq@chevrolet.com” for a username you’ll be marked SPAM.
So besides having many rules (bouncers) I feel there’s probably a rule limit (bouncers that bend rules). You know, that bouncer that lets you in because you’re draped in girls. So my opinion is make sure you’re emails are clean (use lots of real words), and full of hotness (minimal pictures, just one hottie).
Email. It’s more club than you think. Roll on it.
