What did Zeus do? ·

Mar 04, 2010

Welcome. I’ve noticed people searching for the terms, What did Zeus do and hitting my site. I’m about to turn my site, the zeusdidit portion into a Zeus comic of sorts and was curious what it was that you were looking for in specific. This way I can create a page specifically for what zeus did in relation to your search and you won’t feel like the Internet has left a big gaping hole yet again.

So someone out there, every so often, searches for what Zeus has done. I’m imagining that this is a high school or college question and someone has some answers. If you have any opinions, questions or answers on the Greek god Zeus and what he’s done, please post them or just post clues to where I can get more information so I can help others with whatever they were looking for.

Like I said, I’ll create something in the future to help me unburden this mystery of what some people were actually looking for and possibly help others as well.

Cheers,
Zeus
I’m a visual person and thought it would be interesting to share with you some visual results from external outside photo galleries. Top is Flickr, bottom is Picasa.

  3. Gaia is believed by some sources (Joseph Fontenrose 1959 and others) to be the original deity behind the Oracle at Delphi. She passed her powers on to, depending on the source, Poseidon, Apollo or Themis. Apollo is the best-known as the oracle power behind Delphi, long established by the time of Homer, having killed Gaia’s child Python there and usurped the chthonic power. Hera punished Apollo for this by sending him to King Admetus as a shepherd for nine years.

  4. Apollo was the son of Zeus, but he was not always on good terms with Zeus. Hera once tried to conspire against Zeus. Apollo and the other Olympians went along with the conspiracy. Zeus prevailed and punished both Apollo and Poseidon by forcing them to slave as mortals on Troy’s walls for a year. Another time, Apollo was forced to be a herdsman when he killed the Cyclopes in retaliation for Zeus killing his son Aesculapius.

Asclepius is the god of medicine and healing in ancient Greek religion. Asclepius represents the healing aspect of the medical arts; his daughters are Hygieia (“Health”), Iaso (“Medicine”), Aceso (“Healing”), Aglæa/Ægle (“Healthy Glow”), and Panacea (“Universal Remedy”). The rod of Asclepius, a snake-entwined staff, remains a symbol of medicine today, although sometimes the caduceus, or staff with two snakes, is mistakenly used instead. He was associated with the Roman/Etruscan god Vediovis.

Zeus killed Asclepius with a thunderbolt because he raised Hippolytus from the dead and accepted gold for it. Other stories say that Asclepius was killed because after bringing people back from the dead, Hades thought that no more dead spirits would come to the underworld, so he asked his brother Zeus to remove him. This angered Apollo who in turn murdered the cyclops who had made the thunderbolt for Zeus. For this act, Zeus banned Apollo from the night sky and commanded Apollo to serve Admetus, King of Thessaly. After Asclepius’ death, Zeus placed Asclepius among the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus (“the Serpent Holder”).

Check wikipedia for “Asclepius” for more info or links on him.
